Girls on the Run 2014

Girls on the Run was last Saturday, my second run in May 2014.  We all met as a team and started together.
This run is the only one I know where the majority of the participants wear the race shirt, it always looks so cool when you see a sea of color.
Maggie did not do very well this year, she just would not run at all not matter what I did to encourage her.  I tried everything, but nothing worked.  She walked, she cried, she whined.  I eventually left her when we saw the finish line and took this picture of her crossing about a minute after me
After making out she was dying and a bunch of melodrama, she immediately turned around and was fine.  She wasn't even breathing that hard.  She is so frustrating sometimes!!!  Still, we made it and I will keep on trying to get her to exercise whenever I can

Recent food-related stuff

Sam made these steak kebabs with the cherry sauce last weekend, they turned out to be really good
We ate therm with cucumber, mango and avocado salad
Ben had made pita when he was in Culinary Camp and made some more when he was home.  They were really good and surprisingly easy to make
Ben has been coming to work with me quite a lot this Summer.  He's a big fan of Fresh Gatherings and gets lunch there, it is all locally grown food and I'm glad he likes it.  He had this huge sandwich one day
and these tacos another day
We went to First Watch for breakfast yesterday, last weekend of Summer vacation....

Cereal for breakfast?

I always think that breakfast is the hardest meal to accommodate when you are watching what you eat, or when you go out of town, or really any time you are out of your routine.  I recently read a paleo article that said exactly the same thing and offered up a bunch of egg recipes for variety.
This is certainly true with Ben and Maggie these days.  They (particularly Maggie) had been eating Coco Roos for breakfast for years and never been bothered by the routine, but now it's really hard to get them to eat anything in the morning as they are bored with eggs or sausage every day.
Sam went out of town this week and after we dropped him off at the airport, we went to Target.  As we were walking around, Ben said "Can we get some cereal now that Dad isn't here?"  I told him to wait until we got to Trader Joe's and see if there was something healthier there.  Luckily, they had forgotten by the time we got to Trader Joe's!!!!!

Breakfast for the kids

Sam has been trying to get the kids off the sugary cereals for a long time.  I have stopped buying any cereal for them and it finally ran out this week.  Now, we are trying to find substitutes that they will eat.  Neither of them will eat the no-oat oatmeal, but they will eat eggs and have been doing so this week.  This morning, Ben got up and immediately said "I'm going to make eggs for breakfast".  He proceeded to make 4 eggs and then made up this plate for Maggie, which he took to her with a glass of orange juice.

What you DON'T want to see in a lunchbox

I try very hard to strike a balance between eating right and eating enjoyment with the kids.  I usually pack them some meat (Maggie likes chicken chunks, Ben likes deer sausage), cheese (Maggie likes the Babybell Gouda, Ben likes cheddar sliced off the block), carrots (Ben will eat them, Maggie ignores them til she gets home) and grapes (wow, something they both like and will eat) for school lunch.  Sometimes, I'll give them a sandwich (Ben will eat PBJ, Maggie won't), but it never looks like this (honest).  This was Maggie's lunch after Valentine's Day parties.  Her whole bag was green and sticky.  It had to be from sherbet candy that she got at school.  The picture doesn't even do it justice, it was way grosser than this looks!!!!
